Three Levels of Chimney Inspection

Level 1

Annual Routine Inspection

A visual inspection of all readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and accessible portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. Recommended when conditions haven't changed and the system has been operating properly.

Level 2

Real Estate & Change-of-Use

Includes everything in Level 1, plus accessible areas in attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Required when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, or when changing fuel type or adding an appliance.

Level 3

Hazard Investigation

The most thorough inspection. May require removal of certain components when a serious hazard is suspected. Used when a Level 1 or 2 indicates concealed damage or when there has been a major event like a chimney fire or earthquake.

Why Annual Cleaning Matters

Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood. It accumulates on the inside walls of your chimney and is highly flammable. Stage 3 creosote — the most dangerous — is tar-like and nearly impossible to remove without professional equipment.
